The
Mexican peso is divided into 100 cents ("centavos"). The
peso symbol ("$") is easily confused with that for the
U.S. dollar. To clarify this problem, prices are often
expressed followed by the letters "M.N." ("Moneda Nacional"),
that is, National Currency. Try to always have small coins
or bills for tips and minor purchases, since small stores,
taxis and buses are not always able to change large bills.
Peso bills circulate in 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 peso
denominations. Coins circulate in denominations of 10,
20 and 50 centavos, as well as 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 pesos.
