In
Mexico, a tip ("propina") is not obligatory, but is appreciated.
In restaurants, we recommend leaving 10-15% of the total
bill, according to the quality of the service. If you
pay by credit card, be sure to fill in the space designated
for the tip, since if you leave it blank you run the risk
of someone unscrupulous filling in the amount. Taxi drivers
do not expect tips, unless they help you carry your suitcases.
In many spots, like gas stations, supermarkets or parking
lots, the personnel do not earn a salary and live from
tips. Store prices usually include the 15% Value-Added
Tax (I.V.A.: Impuesto al Valor Agregado), though not always.
If you require it, you can ask for a receipt with a breakdown
of the tax ("impuesto desglosado").
